Penkhull Crowned World Champions!
The #WorldSeriesofFlags was organised by The Flag Institute
and took place on Twitter throughout August and September 2020
Penkhull overcame Dun Laoghaire (Ireland), South Uist (Scotland), St Louis (USA) and Bloxwich (England) on the way to the final. Penkhull Faced Tiree over a 24 hour vote from September 15th-16th.
Go to The Flag page on Facebook and you'll be able to look back over the amazing journey!
The Final v Tiree
Tiree is the most westerly island in the Inner Hebrides Islands of Scotland. The population may be just 650 but boy do they know how to whip up support! The island has beautiful beaches and is blessed with more hours of sunshine than anywhere in the UK and has welcomed many visitors who could be drawn on for support.
Penkhull got off to a flying start and were soon in a commanding lead with more than 70% of the vote. But Tiree had their Island Ranger and former Labour 'spin doctor' Alistair Campbell on board and by the halfway point had clawed themselves back to level terms. And then the thousands of votes had the two teams hovering around 50% each until just a couple of hours before the voting closed.
In the end Penkhull achieved the win with just 51.6% of the near 14,000 votes!
It feels fitting that while the competition may have gone global, the final was between two fiercely loyal communities representing an English Village and a Scottish Island. What wonderful communities they are!
Congratulations to everyone involved.
FA Cup of Flags
In May 2020 the Flag Institute ran a Twitter competition to find the best flag in England. Penkhull overcame some big games in the group and knockout stages and in the final triumphed over Preston with over 6,ooo votes - which as the Flag institute pointed out is roughly 100% of the population of the village!
This magnificent trophy was very kindly designed and made by Emma Bailey Ceramics and sponsored by The Coachmakers Arms, Hanley
